How the technology of the SoNick battery functions
Every battery is made up of single cells connected in series and in parallel. During charging, the salt (NaCl) and nickel (Ni) are transformed into nickel chloride (NiCl2) at the cathode and sodium (Na) in the anodic section. Discharge occurs by means of an opposite reaction, with the sodium reacting to the nickel chloride at the positive electrode. All the cells, which have metal containers, have electrodes separated by a ceramic barrier that is permeable to sodium ions. Due to this characteristic the chemical reaction can occur only if electronic current passes through an outside circuit; hence there are no parallel reactions. This ensures 100% coulometric efficiency. A metal-ceramic seal hermetically closes the cell. No maintenance is needed for the entire life of the battery. The open circuit voltage (OCV) of the cells is 2.58V per cell and remains constant for most of the discharge profile.
